Q: What is the first thing I do when a family member passes away?
A: Following the passing of a loved one, you should contact the medical doctor under whose care they were, or in the case of a sudden or unexpected death, you should contact An Garda S?och?na. Following this, you should contact the funeral directors of your choosing who can advise you further on arranging a funeral.
Q: What is embalming and is it necessary ?
A: Death is a certainty we all possess in life and the loss of a loved one is inevitable, unfortunately at times sooner rather than later and in general, one which is rarely discussed and frequently unprepared for.
The traditional Irish funeral involves a "wake" which usually occurs in the deceased's home or a close family member's home and more recently, family may decide to have the deceased's remains resting at a funeral home.
The professional skills of an Embalmer is paramount in endeavoring to assist in returning the deceased to as peaceful and natural state as possible.
Modern embalming is the temporary hygienic treatment and preparation of a deceased remains using a formaldehyde based fluid to sanitise and preserve the body which ultimately enables an optimal natural presentation of the deceased for their family.
We strongly recommend that all deceased persons in our care are embalmed. In the case of international repatriation, embalming is required.
Q: Is it possible to organise donations to a charity instead of flowers?
A: It is possible to have donations made to a charity of your choice instead of flowers. You should indicate your wishes to the funeral director, who can include this on the various obituary notices and we can arrange for a donations box, if required.
Q: What happens if a death occurs abroad?
A: We understand the trauma faced by families of those who pass away abroad. We have a wealth of experience in putting arrangements in place to have your loved ones brought home for burial or cremation here in Ireland.
